We are Lar Joana Angélica. Our mission is to promote public policies for children and adolescents, safeguarding rights and providing opportunities for the development of vulnerable women. Through education and culture, we train multipliers capable of transforming their own environments.
Our story
The idea of founding an NGO emerged on April 28, 1999, through the NOITE FELIZ Group, a project created by 18 students who had just finished a theater course.
This project included workshops in theater, visual arts, poetry, and graffiti with the goal of staging the play "Christmas Without a Moon," which was ultimately performed in several community schools and daycare centers in the outskirts of Salvador.
This mobilization resulted in collaborations with the Salvador Hip-Hop Movement, a movement that focuses on and encourages youth empowerment, developing actions to improve the quality of education and promote social justice.
Since its historical formation, the neighborhood has undergone social and geographical displacement, created as a subdivision and invasion resulting from the deforestation of three existing farms in the area. The neighborhood is divided into four regions: Derba, Boca da Mata, Nova Brasília, and Lagoa da Paixão. Until 1969, the neighborhood was part of the municipality of Lauro de Freitas, which meant that Valéria was included late in the city's map. This explains the absence of Valéria on maps of the city of Salvador prior to 1991.
With twenty-two years of operation in the neighborhood, Lar Joana Angélica has already served thousands of people, including children, young people, and adults, carrying out various artistic, cultural, and educational projects.
In recent years, the Home has been seeking to expand its possibilities for partners and funders.
Together with foreign and Brazilian partnerships, we survive on projects and funding, enabling us to provide direct assistance to children, young people, and a group...
A fluctuating number of women in the community who have an informal link to the organization.
Currently, our partners are Project for People through the funded distance learning support program; SMED, CREAS, CESE, Unex, Colégio Estadual Professora Noêmia Rêgo and Escola Municipal S. Francisco de Assis in Valéria.
